ROAD TRANSPOR7'Wales & Border is one of a trio of new titles from ex-traffic cop Paul Heaton. The title is somewhat misleading for anyone expecting a general round-up of operators in that fertile area, consisting instead of more in-depth histories of just five companies.
In fact, two thirds of the book arc dedicated to just two firms: Cardiff's BW Rees & Son and, with unfortunate timing, Lloyds of Ludlow. The other three are from the Ross and Monmouth area:BM Cole & Sons,Wm Parry & Sons, and RohertsTransport (Ross Roadways). Each operator gets a separate section, which includes a brief history and listing of significant vehicles followed by evocative photo sets.
Although a comprehensive review of the hauliers of the Welsh borders and a dedicated history of Lloyds would be suitable candidates for publishing in their own rights. Hea ton's effort provides a welcome taster of life in this area where industry and agriculture meet.
The other new titles cover Monmouthshire operators and a dedicated history of the Forest of Dean's Read family concern.
