2011 was not a banner year for Wincanton: the withdrawal from Europe and the food service sector culminated in the announcement of a £75.5m pre-tax loss in the six months to 30 September. However, there has been some good news during the year in the shape of contract renewals and conquests, but by far the most positive headlines have been generated by Dave Rowlands.
A more vocal advocate for longer semis – sorry, high-volume trailers – we can’t think of. He even promoted the trailers to the Daily Express during the early stages of the FairFuelUK campaign (no doubt helped by a proactive PR department).
He’s confident of how successful the trailers will be (as and when they start running).
Perhaps more so than Stobart, the industry and the government will view Rowlands’ and Wincanton’s performance as a key barometer of the long-term benefits of high-volume trailers.
