AFTER 27 YEARS of discussion, Sittingbourne now has a bypass. The new road connects the Eurolink Business Park to the A249, and onwards to the M2, M20 and M25, avoiding the notorious town centre bottleneck.
The £23m project, technically difficult due to the crossing of a creek that required considerable piling, was brought in under budget by local contractor Jacksons.
Mercedes-Benz dealer Sparshatts, one of the oldest occupants of the Eurolink Business Park, has been one of the prime movers behind the project, so it was appropriate that it provided transport for the opening ceremony.
Two classic Mercedes-Benz trucks provided by Sparshatts and Lenham Storage transported the Mayor and Mayoress of Sittingbourne along the new link road after the customary speeches and ribbon cutting.
Eurolink is one of the largest business parks in Kent, providing employment for some 6,000 people. ■
