The latest version's makeover keeps the formula intact, with the engine's extra torque a welcome addition. It's also a cinch to drive, while payload and load space remain competitive.
But this approach only gets it so far, because the competition has moved on in recent years. If you want your van to be a multi-tasking machine that is as tough en the outside as it is versatile on the inside, then the Hiace fails to score.
It lacks that competitive edge that would help it move up the ladder. And with a new model just a couple of years off, we reckon Toyota is biding its time.
