A COUNTRY PARSON, the Rev N. D. J. Came, of Church Enstone, who supports the extension of M40 from Oxford to Warwick in the belief that it will relieve the busy A34, has incurred the wrath of Julian Lloyd Webber, a name not unknown in the world of entertainment.
In an exchange of correspondence in The Daily Telegraph the cleric was asked whether it might "not be better if he threw his full ecclesiastical weight behind a campaign to put freight back on to the railways". Moreover, he was told, "surely the Church should be campaigning ... for a Britain where Christians and others might still be able to experience the beauty of its countryside?" Is one to assume that even God hates lorries and limits His benevolence to the railways? If so, Freightliners' destiny is ambiguous, but, closed shop or not, St Peter Parker is assured of a job as ticket collector at the pearly gates.
