• The average pay of employees in the road haulage industry is £17,300, according to research into salaries and productivity by Plimsoll, while hauliers have an income of around £65,000 per employee. However, it is rarely the most productive company which pays the highest salary, says the report: few haulage companies score highly on both counts. Erith Holdings came out on top, reporting sales per employee of £300,600 with average pay of 228,800. Hays is second with figures of 298,300 and .223,400, closely followed by McGovern Brothers (2135,500/£23,100), A&J Bull (£1 34,000/222,900) and North American Van Lines (£)07,300/222,800). Among companies with the lowest sales figures, average salaries are below £15,000.
Plimsoll says that employee numbers are up in the road haulage industry— the average number of staff per company in 1997 was 73, up one on 1996. Sales growth averaged 6%.
