TRANSPORT SECRETARY Geoff Hoon has revealed that E6bn wil be spent on motorway improvements, including widening 510 miles of UK motorways to enable the hard shoulder to be routinely used for moving traffic.
The widening project will involve sections of most of the country's motorways, including the M1, M25, M6, M62, M3 and M4. The policy of using the hard shoulder to increase capacity was started by Hoon's predecessor as transport secretary, Ruth Kelly. who indicated in March 2008 that hard-shoulder running could be extended following a successful trial on the M42.
Hoon says: "It is clear that many of our major roads need more capacity and we are committing up to E6bn to improve the road network — including extending hard-shoulder running to some of the busiest parts to provide much-needed relief from congestion."
