NATIONAL TRUCK crime intelligence unit TruckPol has found a replacement for the outgoing head of unit, despite not knowing whether it will even exist in three months' time.
The Home Office is undecided about whether to continue funding TruckPol in the next financial year, despite figures showing recorded crimes rocketing by 83% in 2008 (CM8 January).
Detective Constable Andy Round (pictured right), who leads the unit and is its only full-time officer, retires next month, but he says a successor has been found. "We'veemployed someone to replace me in February when I retire," he adds. "With the funding issue, it's a brave move to employ someone."
The yet-to-be-named replacement
will be introduced at the first TruckPol meeting of the year, on 16 February.
Detective Constable Paul Lambotte, head of the Association of Chief Police Officers' Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service, has pledged to fight for continued TruckPol funding. However, a Home Office spokeswoman says arrangements have yet to be finalised.
