Operators are entitled to pay the £160 private rate of VED In the UK if their vehicles only run empty in the UK. But once those vehicles pick up loads their use on the Continent would be illegal, requiring enforcement action by the foreign authorities, says the DULA.
This clarification follows reports of UK hauliers attempting to get round the UK's punitive rates of VED by operating some trucks on the private tax rate on the Continent.
Although they are running on UK 0-licences at the 1160 VED rate, the vehicles are used for transporting goods from UK ports to their international destinations.
They are fed with traffic at domestic ports by UK trucks paying the full HGV VED. They only return to the UK unladen for maintenance.
