TNT HAS WON a number of concessions from London councils in an attempt to slash its annual £300,000 parking fine bill within the M25. Westminster and Camden Councils have agreed to move their Monday-Saturday ban on deliveries from 8.30am-10pm to 11 am-lOpm -This is a very positive outcome," says a TNT spokesman. "The change is an immediate one." Westminster Council has also agreed to review its road signs and its fines' appeal process. If an operator receives a parking ticket it can now include, as part of its appeal evidence, a delivery note and have the fine revoked.
Operators will also receive pro-active reports from councils documenting every ticket incurred.
Other plans include the produc tion ot a joint industry video from TNT and other members of the Express Carriers Group, and the councils, which will advise traffic wardens and drivers and how best to handle disputes.
High-visibility jackets for traffic wardens will be introduced alongside a high-tech aid called 'Move It' — a light-sensitive sensor placed on the driver's side window When a traffic warden touches the sensor an electric signal passes to a driver's pager. When it goes off the driver knows the clock is running and he has a maximum of 20 minutes to make a delivery.
"We think these changes are equitable," the TNT spokesman adds." If it all bears fruit the parking situation in 2005 will be radically different and much more sensible."
