THE TRANSPORT & General Workers Union remains locked in discussions with supermarket giant Morrisons over the union agreement with its drivers.
The T&G is hopeful a resolution can be reached. However, it is quite determined any deal will not include binding independent arbitration of any disputes ( CM 15 July). The union is unwilling to have binding arbitration in an agreement because after the last pay negotiations, which were rejected by 83% of the Morrisons drivers, the independent arbitrator nonetheless forced it to accept the deal.
A T&G spokesman says: "That was the trigger which made bind ing arbitration such an issue.
"We have no problem with arbitration — indeed we want it — but clearly we can't be put in a situation where a deal is imposed that 83% of our members rejected," he concludes.
Nobody at Morrisons was available for comment as Commercial Motor went to press.
