• by Guy Sheppard Cider maker Bulmers has signed up for trials of a new freight train capable of travelling at up to 75mph. The Freight Multiple Units (FMUs) are backed by logistics giant Exel, which says their speed and flexibility could revolutionise rail freight (CM8-14 March).
Hereford-based Bulmers used rail until the early 1990s, when British Rail withdrew its service to the north and Scotland. it has since relied entirely on its Inhouse fleet of 40 trucks and subcontractors.
Spokesman George Thomas says the trials will start in July. "It frts in with the new sustainability policy we have adopted over the last 12 months," he adds. "An environmental transport policy features strongly in that."
Bulmers, which makes 115 million gallons of cider a year, will be the first manufacturer to test the FIAUs.
