MERCEDES-BENZ is piloting a roadside assistance service called Pulse at seven of its dealers.
Technicians' vans are equipped with hand-held computers (PDAs), tracking devices and status boards on which technicians can state if they are en route, busy or available.
This data will help the Mercedes call centre decide which technician to send to a breakdown. The PDAs will contain all the information on a breakdown, which is then updated by the technician and available to all parties involved. The Pulse system will be rolled out to all Mercedes dealers in the UK during the summer.
• M-B has teamed up with Truckfile to introduce the Electronic Inspection System (EIS) by the end of April. This also uses PDAs and a central computer to store vital information and legal documentation.
Tedmicians using EIS complete their inspections as normal, but record data on their PDAs. This is double-checked before being sent to the web-based system.
Authorised users will be able to access EIS data on a particular truck at any time to prove the vehicle has been properly maintained.
