Absence of C.M.U.A. Representatives Evokes Comment at Meeting of Operators' Organizations in Leeds
MOTWITHSTANDING the absence 111 of any C.M.T.1. A. delegates, a Yorkshire conference representative of other operators' organizations decided, at Leeds last week, to establish a Yorkshire area committee under the auspices of the Standing Joint Committee of Road Hauliers' National Organizations, and some of the seats on the new committee were allocated to the C.M.U.A. Mr. Fred Pickering, 0.B.E., J.P., hon. secretary of the Bradford and District Chamber of Trade and of the Bradford and District Commercial Vehicle Owners Federation, presided as independent chairman.
The fact that no C.M.U.A. representatives were present evoked critical comments. A resolution stating that the conference much regretted their absence was adopted after the reading of correspondence from London, which indicated that the C.M.U.A.'s National Council had asked the Association's divisional and area secretaries not to arrange for representatives to attend any such S.J.C. area conferences for the time being, pending clarification of certain points relating to the S.J.C.'s reorganization proposals.
Mr. Harry Clark, manager and secretary of the Federation of Yorkshire Road Transport Employers, who is convenor for the S.J.C. meetings in Yorkshire, suggested that the absence of C.M.U.A. representatives from the first meeting was due to "a lack of statesmanship " in C.M.U.A. national policy. At last week's meeting a lucid resume of events leading up to it was given by Mr, J. A. M. Bright, of Selby, a member of the National Council of A.R.O., who remarked that, in S.J.C. matters, A.R.O., had from the beginning definitely observed democratic principles and constitutional procedure.
Seats on the new Yorkshire Area Standing Joint Committee were allocated to A.R.O., C.M.U.A., Federation of Yorkshire Road Transport Employers and Sheffield Horse and Motor Owners' Association (both affiliated to the National Federation of Road Transport Employers), National Association of Furniture Removers and Warehousemen, and National Conference of Express Carriers.
Mr. J. S. Hutchinson, of Huddersfield, was elected to represent the Yorkshire committee on the National Standing Joint Committee.
