warehouse and distribution jobs in the UK as part of a move to "revolutionise" its network. The new jobs include 500 at a new distribution centre in Lutterworth; 400 at a new depot in Grangemouth which will open in June; 200 at a depot in Falkirk which opened this month and 100 at new recycling sites. Around 500 staff are also understood to be transferring from a depot in Wigan to a new distribution centre opening In Skelmersdale in October.
A spokeswoman for Asdapart of US giant Wal-Mart— says it is not yet known how many drivers will be recruited as a result of the expansion.
"We don't have a breakdown of the figures," she says.
Asda's distribution director David Gibbens says: "This year we will revolutionise our distribution network. Wal-Mart technology means we can get products into our stores faster and more efficiently than ever."
Last year Asda said it needed 200 more drivers to cope with increasing sales (CM 30 May 2002).
