• One in fve trucks checked by Trading Standards officer's in Gloucestershire over the last year was overloaded, according to new figures.
Gloucestershire County Council's Trading Standards officers weighed nearly 1,000 vehicles during countywide checks, with many of the vehicles' owners, operators and drivers successfully prosecuted.
The County Council says: "Overloading has an adverse effect on the road surfaces, causes excess pollution and may make the vehicle unsafe due to reduced braking efficiency and poor handling."
Roger Manes, head of Trading Standards, adds: "The overloading of goods vehicles on Gloucestershire roads will not be tolerated. Our specialist enforcement team will be work ing with the county's traffic police and will be increasing the number of checks in order to make our roads a safer place."
