AN ABERDEEN-based reefer operator has been granted authority to increase the number of trailers operating from its depot, but subject to various undertakings being imposed following neighbours' complaints about noise, diesel fumes and issues of road safety.
The conditions require trucks leaving Grampian Country Pork Halls' Broxburn site to give way to vehicles entering the site and to limit refrigerated trailers to running on diesel for no more than 15 minutes before connecting to electrical points while at the distribution centre. The firm offered to reduce the number of vehicles authorised at the depot from 50 to 40 as part of its application to increase the number of trailers to 35 from 25.
The application attracted representations from nine local residents at a three-day hearing before Scottish Deputy Traffic CornmissionerRichardMcFarlane. Noise, fumes, and safety issues at the main access point were raised.
General distribution and logistics manager Kevin McCabe said the fleet at Broxburn had been replaced with more environmentally friendly vehicles. Deliveries to regional distribution centres throughout the UK were being sub-contracted to others.
The refrigerated trailers would remain at Broxburn and would be properlymaintained. The company did not intend to use them on the road because they were required for cold storage. Widening the entrance was being investigated subject to planning permision.
When the hearing resumed, evidence was given that the firm had taken further sound proofing measures by erecting acoustic barriers at the east and west sides.
The DTC said that a problem for the representors was that noise from lorries and refrigerated trailers were only two sources among many others generated by the various operations located at the Broxburn site.
He was in no doubt the entrance and exit facilities could be better. Ideally, the gate should be widened to allow vehicles to pass.
