• The first of six new Hoover Ltd. distribution centres was opened at Bolton last week. Twenty vehicles based at the new Breightmet Fold Lane depot will distribute almost a quarter of the total Hoover turnover in the UK: 66 products are involved.
Postal orders from dealers are processed, using punched cards and data processing equipment in conjunction with the central computer at the Perival, Middlesex, head office, to which the centre is linked by land line.
Products and spares are brought from three Hoover factories at Perivale, Merthyr Tydfil and 'Cambuslang by a new fleet of 20-ton capacity articulated trunk vehicles, carrying their loads on three tiers.
Multi-deck loading is facilitated by large loading pits believed to be the first of their type installed in Britain.
