• An unusual phone system is being used to combat traffic congestion caused by vehicles delivering goods to shops. The new system went into operation on November 12, when the Mayor of Basingstoke, Ur. J. F. Balding, opened the £.5m initial phase of the town's new E9m shopping development.
Nerve centre of the installation—designed and installed by Telephone Rentals Ltd.—is a 100-line push-button console in a traffic control office on the service road leading to the unloading bays of the 64 shops included in the initial phase.
From this point, the thity supervisor can keep in touch with the bays and control the flow of vehicles accordingly—at the same time. maintaining a security check on traffic passing through.
