Fined for Spilling Acid on Road

UYDROCHLORIC acid which had been spilled from a lorry and left on the road was the subject of a charge at Eckington Magistrates' Court last week. The police alleged that the acid, found on a road at Clowne, could have been injurious to eyes or have caused difficult breathing.
Stanley Kestle, Moorfield Avenue, Bolsover, was charged with having an insecure load, and Coalite and Chemical Products, Ltd., Buttermilk Lane, Bolsover, were summoned for permitting the offence.
According to the police, a carboy had fallen over when the lorry stopped, and the contents spilled on the road and pavement. The driver put the carboy in the correct position and drove away without any attempt to remove the "offensive matter" which was left.
Reginald Carr, technical manager of Mercol Products, Ltd., Sheffield, from whom the lorry was being driven, stated that the liquid was not dangerous to the hands and eyes, and fumes could be breathed without any trouble to the lungs.
Mr. F. G. Leslie, defending, submitted that no danger was likely to be caused.
Kestle was fined £2, and Coalite and Chemical Products, Ltd., £10 with £1 7s. costs.
