The National Guild of Transport Managers' London centre held their annual banquet and ball in the magnificent, almost awe-inspiring, splendour of the Baronial Hall Banqueting Suite, Mincing Lane, last week.
Among the guests I spotted John Dempster, the freight transport manager of SELNEC. He is one of the few commercial transport managers in local government. He was there in his role as national vice-president—"and that's the way it is going to stay," the vice-president told me. "You know how it is in local government, today we are too busy to get too involved."
Which seems bad luck on Graham Simons, who has been national president for five-anda-half of the Guild's six-year lifespan. He also finds life rather hectic in his fruit business and he confided, too, that he would like to pass on the badge of office.
There may just be a solution. Graham's first six-month period was filling in for Michael Heseltine after the Tories lost office. What about another MP or ex-PM? There are plenty about.
