EXCLUDING cars and motorcycles, a 1-4tota1 of 11,005 vehicles was registered for the first time under the Roads Act, 1920, in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, in May of this year. The comparable total for the first five months
of this year is 46,182. These figures include exempt vehicles.
Figures contained in the monthly statistical review issued by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders emphasize the popularity of the oil
engine for the larger passenger vehicles. In May, 81 oilers in the 32-40-seater class and 126 in the 48-56-seater class were registered, whereas only two petrol vehicles with 32-40 seats and one petrolengined double-decker with 48-56 seats were registered.
In the first five months of the year, 152 oilers and 16 petrol vehicles were registered in the 32-4()-seater class, and 636 oil-engined and six petrol 48-56seaters.
As regards goods vehicles, petrol engines predominate in vehicles up to 4i-ton payload capacity, but thereafter the oil engine leads the field. The most popular type of goods vehicle is that in the 12-20-cwt. class, of which 1,921 were registered in May, and 7,529 in the first five months of this year. The next most popular class is that for vehicles of 45-50-cwt. payload capacity.
