• Contract hire and rental in the UK has increased by 35% over the last three years according to a recent survey.
BRS Truck Rental, the National Freight Consortium subsidiary, is the largest rental and contract hire company in the country with a turnover of 2270 million and a fleet of more than 7,000 vehicles.
The company has opened eight new truck rental sites this year — it now has 73 rental depots nationwide — and is planning to open a further
seven in 1987. It will also be spending some £13.5 million on 800 new vehicles before the end of the year.
The enormous growth in the sector since 1983 reflects the impact of tax changes introduced in that year says the Survey, which was conducted by CM's sister publication Motor Transport, and covered more than 300 companies.
The two firms nearest to BRS on turnover are Evans Halshaw Contracts and Interleasing, although Autolease, Trailerent and Rentco are closer in terms of vehicle numbers.
