TITLE Chief executive OR Highways Agency
Mussolini might have made the trains run on time and Moses might have parted the Red Sea, but Highways Agency (HA) chief executive Graham Dalton has the almost impossible task of keeping the UK's major roads open and -ft for purpose.
Before entering the civil service, he worked as a civil engineer in the private sector with major construction contractors. In 2001 he joined the Strategic Rail Authority before moving to the Department for Transport in 2005 as director of projects, responsible for major rail infrastructure. Dalton took the helm at the HA in summer 2008.
This summer, the government tasked the HA with developing a robust winter resilience strategy, with an emphasis on ensuring sufficient supply of salt. Given the extreme winter conditions we have experienced in the past month, the transport industry needs Dalton and his team to be on top of their game.
