TRANSPORT of goods by road in vehicles owned by the American railways has increased greatly. At the end of 1940 U.S. railways had 72,000 road-transport units in operation and, in addition to these motors owned directly, the Railway Express Agency (a co-operative railway organization) had 14,000 vehicles.
