A NUMBER of good features characterizes the latest
" Easy-Start" slotted-skirt pistons, made by Specialloid, Ltd., North Finchley, London, N.12, which are now available for several popular makes of commercial vehicle, notably for Austin, Bedford, Commer, Dodge, Fordson and Morris models in the light-van class. By reason of the circumferential portion of the skirt slot, the piston crown on that side overhangs, to a small extent, and is, to a limited degree, isolated in respect of heat dissipation. To prevent distortion of the crown under cylinder pressure, therefore, and to equalize heat transference, the ribbing between crown, and gudgeon-pin bosses is off-set, as shown in an accompanying sketch. Wherever design permits an oil-control ring in the lower part of the skirt, this is provided. All the pistons in this range have oil-set cast relief designed to ensure efficiency. Tin plating is standardized, the object being to resist " petrol scuffing" and to afford a bearing surface that will precisely accommodate itself to the mating parts, namely the cylinder wJIs, during running-in.
