Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Former Leyland Daf managing director marketing and sales Roger Phillips has landed a top job at Iveco Ford.

Phillips joins the Langleybased truck manufacturer in the new post of director of commercial strategy, reporting directly to managing director Alan Fox.

Phillips's appointment comes as Iveco Ford reports a 50% rise in losses, to around £30m. Last year, the company sold 6,883 vehicles; down from 11,096 in 1990.

Phillips left Leyland Daf three months ago in a management shake-up (CM 10-16 Oct 1991). Initially he considered taking on a Leyland Daf dealership.

Phillips is not the first truck boss to move between the two leading manufacturers recently: David Gill, Leyland Daf managing director of marketing and sales, was poached from the top sales job at Iveco Ford in 1990. Cl Iveco Ford is the second manufacturer within a fortnight to predict a growth in the UK truck market in 1992.

Speaking at IFT's annual "State of the Nation" conference, managing director Alan Fox reported that the anglo-Italian truck maker is budgeting "for a market of around 37,000 units" — up 15% on last year's total of 32,184 trucks and artics over 3.5 tonnes.

Like Leyland Daf, IFT expects many of the new sales to be replacement business which had been previously put off, Acknowledging that IFT performed badly in the 1991 tractor market, not least due to vehicle supply problems, Fox declared that the artic sector "will be the subject of significant attention from us this year, both on a tactical and strategic basis".
