Lihe Hawk still has no idea what the word "logistics" means but readers who do will surely be interested to learn that the final of the Davies & Robson Logistics Game takes place live on 4 February at Highgate House Conference Centre, Northants. This year's finalists are Do It All, Varity Perkins, British American Tobacco and Logistics Advantage. It seems that competitors pretend to be logistics planners for a of potato crisp manufacturer which has a factory and three depots. Their "jobs" involve purchasing, production scheduling and traffic management. "The market is highly competitive and the task is to create a plan that produces high product availability at lowest cost," explains Davies & Robson. "The winner is the company that averages the lowest costs over the planning period and has a viable ongoing position." In other words, take a potato, turn it into crisps, deliver it to your customers on time and make some money into the bargain. It's simple when you put it into plain language.
