• A London haulier is at the centre of a Customs and Excise investigation after drugs worth £7m were discovered hidden on board one of its trucks.
The inquiry into the unnamed company began last week when Dover Customs officials found 89kg of heroin stuffed in the vehicle's wind deflector.
The Turkish driver, 34-year-old Durmas Yamakoglu, has appeared before Dover magistrates charged with attempting to import drugs. The vehicle was carrying a load of pottery from Romania. When it arrived off the Zeebrugge ferry it was stopped by Customs officials who were suspicious about the the construction of its wind deflector.
The heroin was found in a cavily between the deflector's interior and a specially constructed skin. A metal sheet had been secured on the back of the deflector.
