• The first 21 Renault B110 chassis to be specified with automatic transmission have gone into service with Manchester City Council.
The Chrysler Torque Flite three-speed gearboxes were fitted to the five-tonne chassis on line at Renault's Batille plant in the north of France.
The £500,000 batch of 15 crew-cab and four day-cab
variants were supplied with Chelsea side-loading tipper bodies built by Lancashire Tippers of Bolton. They can handle a two-tonne payload and will be used for street cleaning in the Manchester area.
A £700,000 order for 27 standard six-tonne B110 crew-cab chassis has been placed by Norweb. Equipped with lighter 2.75m tipping bodies from Fleetwood Engineering of Preston, they will be used as incident maintenance vehicles and offer a payload of about three tonnes.
A Renault spokesman says: "Local authorities and utilities were a bit apprehensive about moving away from the 50 Series at first, but now they have tried the B series in ones and twos over the past couple of years they are coming back with larger orders."
