Voluntary govt scheme to reduce emissions
THE GOVERNMENT S developing a voluntary scheme designed to get hauliers to record, report and reduce carbon emissions.
Yesterday (July 22), the Department for Transport (DfT) chaired its first meeting of the 'Low Carbon Supply Chain Steering Group' including representatives from the Freight Transport Association (FTA). Road Haulage Association, the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, the British Retail Consortium and the Food Storage and Dis tribution Federation.
The group will draw up a framework that will allow the government to request cuts in greenhouse emissions from the transport industry, in return for tax breaks and more sympathetic regulation.
James Hookham, FTA managing director of policy and communications, says: This group will give us the platform to innovate and bring carbon efficient practices into mainstream business decisions.'
