J. HARRY HOOPER CBE TD has been elected president of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders for 1984/5 by SMMT's Council.
Mr Hooper, 63, is chairman and managing director of Armstrong Equipment, holding company for 27 manufacturing companies in Britain and abroad.
Mr Godfrey Messervy, chairman and chief executive of Lucas Industries PLC, was elected a vice-president of SMMT, suceeding Mr Hooper. Mr Sam Toy, chairman and managing director of Ford of Britain, and Mr John Collyear, chairman of AE PLC, were both re-elected vice-presidents of SMMT.
Mr George Turnbull, as immediate past president becomes deputy president, and Mr Miles Breeden was re-elected honorary treasurer.
