IN RESPONSE TO the Salvesen spokeswoman that drivers at Bellshill are on fully flexible contracts (CM 9 June), I have worked there for over 15 years and it does not say anywhere in my contract that I will work 4x12 hour shifts or rolling weeks.
Last November they gave me a paid day off, a buffet lunch, their thanks for my contribution to the company and a presentation.This year they don't care if I go or not!
It is ironic that the WTD is all about social responsibility and is intended to improve a driver's family and social life.Yet in the year of its introduction drivers for Salvesen and Morrison feel that these aspects of their lives are being undermined by new demands. So much for progress.
Morale at Bristol,Warrington and Aylesford to name only three is at rock bottom, and they get Salvesen to wield the big stick at Bellshill. When Edward Roderick was in charge at Salvesen he said: "Salvesen...values its people, treats them fairly and with respect."
This was in response to the company being criticised in 2001 at a tribunal in Gloucester for allowing local management to run a scheme called Plonker of the Month'. Clearly valuing and respecting employees has not moved forward much in the intervening years since that sorry incident.
Drivers are a marketable commodity but they are consumers too, as are their families, friends and neighbours. How much of Morrison's market share is in this bracket and does Morrison really want to alienate those prospective customers?
