• Alternative lorry routes to the Blackwall Tunnel are to be discussed by Greenwich Council and the GLC.
Complaints from local residents say that heavy lorries have been using a short cut over the steep Vanbrugh Hill and Vanbrugh Fields as a local approach to the tunnel.
The council has sought to ban vehicles over 3 tons ulw from using the roads and the parallel Maze Hill. British Rail supports the idea: the parapets of its bridge over Vanbrugh Hill have been damaged by heavy lorries, but the police say restrictions would be difficult to enforce.
While routes are being agreed, the south area board of the GLC's environmental planning committee suggests that warning signs should be erected in Vanbrugh Hill and a crash barrier put up to protect the railway bridge.
