LT busmen want "substantial" rise

• Representatives of London Transport's 23,000 busmen on Monday lodged a claim for a "substantial" pay increase. This brings to well over 200,000 the number of busmen now awaiting pay rises. The LT men received increases of up to £2.50 a week just before the Government introduced its pay freeze policy last November.
The success of the LT men's claim may well depend upon the outcome of present deliberations by the Department of Employment on a £1 plus four per cent offer accepted recently by Britain's 80,000 municipal busmen. The municipal men won £2.50 a week increases last November as part of the Clegg shift-allowance award. If the DE considers that payment to be a pay rise any further wage increase would be ruled out of court until November this year by the Government's policy of allowing 12 months between wage increases. _ The DE's decision will also vitally affect a 16 per cent pay claim lodged earlier this month on behalf of the 100,000 company busmen. Like the LT and municipal men, they too received £2.50 a week from the Clegg award.

posed new rates for municipal busmen in brackets) are: conductor, £26 (£19.91); one-man driver, £32 (£25.29). Company busmen at present receive between £18.20 and £23.38 a week.
