AThe Commer T3 (Rootes) two-stroke
engine was produced in various versions, the most recent type having a capacity of 3.52 litres and outputs of 125 bhp at 2400 rpm and 318 lb ft torque at 1300 rpm. An earlier 3.52-litre version developed 135 bhp at 2400 rpm and 335 lb ft at 1250 rpm. Before the introduction of this model, a unit was produced that had a capacity of 3.26 litres and developed 117 bhp at 2400 rpm. its torque output being 310 lb ft at 1250 rpm.
It may be of interest that Prof S. G. Timoney of University College Dublin developed an experimental version of the engine, having a variable compression ratio and equipped with turbochargers in series, that developed nearly 300 bhp. The compression ratio was automatically varied between 9 to 1 and 18 to 1.
