11in 1982, Mrs Thatcher's government sold off NFC to its employees. In the mid1980s NFC made Its first US acquisition and began working with Marks & Spencer. In 1989 NFC was floated on the London Stock Exchange, and the nine companies which formed the distribution division became Exel Logistics. In the early '90s NFC entered the US automotive, consumer products and chemical logistics sectors, and expanded Into Central America, Canada and Germany.
In 1994 the company won the contract to run Marks & Spencer's distribution facility In Hong Kong, and completed its national chilled Mod network in France.
In the mid-1990s the company entered the UK drinks industry and expanded into Latin America. It also made a corporate refocus on five sectors: automotive, electronics, retail, consumer and petroleum and chemicals. By the end of the 1990s the company had globalised its communications and management infrastructures.
This year Exel drops the "Logistics" from its name, and NFC plc becomes Exel plc. Employees now own loss than 5% of the shares.
