HAVING READ the article headlined "Tail & Error" (CM 2 March), I note the IRTE is "defining a national standard" for tail-lifts.
The Vehicle Builders and Repairers Association (VBRA) has had in place a generic inspection regime since November 2004. and at present 94 people have registered as `competent persons'.
Provided that the competent person has the relevant practical and theoretical knowledge. it gives companies a system to carry out thorough examinations on all types of tail-lifts.
The VB RA LOLER inspection regime was created at the request of the tail-lift and bodybuilder members of the association, who asked for clarification of the LOLER regulations and what constitutes the "thorough examination' required under the relevant legislation.
VBRA project manager Gerry Braddock developed the regime in 2003 and 2004. in discussion with the HSE, which gave its full support and endorsement.
The first training course was held in November 2004 at MANCAT (Manchester College of Art & Technology) in Openshaw,Manchester. The oneday course was developed by MANCAT with certification by national awarding body NCFE.
The course has been well received by all those who attended.
