The Highway Agency Code of Practice (HACP)says that: • Escort vans need to be 'conspicuous" and that means they should be white, yellow, orange or silver • Vans should have flashing amber lights (of the full-roof-width 'bar' type) fitted transversely to their roofs; the lights should be "visible to the front and rear of the vehicle" • Vehicles should be equipped with a powder or CO,fire extinguisher, and a CE-approved first-aid kit • A direct radio voice link should be installed in the escort vehicle, to enable contact with the abnormal load truck • Vans should be clearly marked at the front as escort vehicles, in lettering at least 150mm high and without shadowing, italics or other lettering effects • High-visibility markings should be applied to the rear of the vehicle • No company livery should be displayed on the front or rear of the vehicle Type "abnormal loads" into the search engine at www.highways.gov.uk to see information on the HACP.
