UNION LEADERS say logistics giant Exel has agreed a pay increase of nearly 20% for more than 60 drivers following a threat of industrial action.
The drivers deliver for retailer Halfords and are mainly based in Redditch, Worcestershire.
Terry Bird, regional industrial organiser for the Transport & General Workers Un ion, says their basic annual earnings will increase from around .£24,000 to £29,000. "It's a ground-breaking deal," he adds. The drivers have had a £2,500 lump-sum payment."
He adds that negotiations were disrupted last year when the contract switched from 'I'DG to Exel. Last month the drivers voted for industrial action when the talks appeared to have stalled.
