• I would be greatly obliged if you would put straight the errors made in the article published about my decision not to seek confirmation of my position as vice-chairman of the Road Haulage Association at the next meeting of the national council (CM 2-8 May).
My decision was not made in order to "concentrate on my two MAN dealerships" since I no longer own any.
The true position is that my interests in the Hempsail Group of Companies were disposed of in 1989.
However, I was retained as a director until this month and I will continue to be involved with my former businesses in an advisory role.
In the normal course of events, I could have sought election as national chairman in May 1992. However, in consequence of no longer holding a directorship in a member company, I no longer fulfil an important credential required of the RHA national chairman, nor indeed the vice-chairman.
Moreover, the demands made upon the time of our national chairman are very considerable and, in my view, require that person to be physically fit enough to cope with the commitment. My longer-term expectations in that context are, to say the least, unpredictable and again in
my view, I do not think that a chairman in dubious health would best serve the interests of the RHA.
I have enjoyed serving the RHA in a number of capacities for more than 20 years and to now deny myself the opportunity to realise a cherished ambition is not easy.
