* A Norfolk haulier has been convicted of driving an
overloaded truck despite producing a letter in court from the customer who loaded the vehicle, accepting full responsibility for the offence. Melton Constablebased Nigel Jolly Transport was fined £200 and ordered to pay £50 costs by Dorking, Surrey magistrates for a 1,740kg overload. Driver Norman Summers was Fined £100 with E30 costs.
On 10 May 1995 Summers stopped his 32tonner at a weighbridge in Leatherhead, Surrey after collecting a load of paving slabs from Town and Country Paving of Littlehampton for delivery to Feltham, Middlesex, and Sudbury.
In a letter to Jolly after the incident, Town and Country general manager John Clifford apologised for the "oversight' in loading and explained it had happened. He explained: "You very often send 38-tonne vehicles in for collection and I assumed that the vehicle had a 23-tonne payload."
