It may prove less easy to convince the 11,600 job hunters who have applied for 480 vacancies at Ford's engine factory at Bridgend, Mid Glamorgan. Unemployment in the area stands at 31.5% but the new jobs won't begin until early 1997. They have come about as a result of a £340m expansion plan to build engines for Fiestas and Escorts.
Ford says it could take a year to choose the right 480. In the meantime, the jobless will just have to pray for a lottery win, or is being a millionaire just a "state of mind" too?
