Filling up before leaving UK would be win-win all round
I HAVE JUST READ your interesting article on vehicles entering the UK from abroad and the never-ending story of the Government's inability to address the problems that are so glaringly obvious to everybody, Why not just make everybody, including cars. HOVs and buses, fill up before they leave the UK? It would be win win win: the Government would get the fuel duty; the hauliers would level the playing field; there would be no expensive vignette, road charging scheme, rebate system blue derv. The entire thing could be policed by customs officers already on site, so there would be no need for more expensive Government quangos or civil servants with the associated pensions and office blocks. There would also be less side-swiping and fewer accidents involving foreign vehicles.
The Government would get the benefit of more of the work staying with UK hauliers, and thereby getting more corporation tax, more money spent on UK lorries, workshops, PAYE, NIC, servicing, tyres etc. The benefits would be endless.
