AFURTHER version of the Land-Rover was announced this week by the Rover Co., Ltd., Solihull, Birmingham. This is a 10-seat utility, based on the 107-in.-wheelbase Land-Rover chassis and known as the long-wheelbase station wagon. Production of this model in the new Land-Rover works at the Solihull site is expected to begin shortly.
The station wagon can be used to carry 10 people over unmade roads and rough country; as a cargo carrier, with the rear seats in the folded position; or as a "safari" vehicle with sleeping accommodation for two persons.
The chassis specification of the new model is identical to that of the 107-in.-wheelbase pick-up, and includes a 4-litre 52 b.h.p. petrol engine, a four-speed synchromesh gearbox and two-speed transfer box, which also contains the four-wheeldrive engagement, and hydraulic two-leading-shoe brakes.
Other vehicles in the Land-Rover range continue unchanged. These consist of a longwheelbase pick-up with separate cab, and standard, station-wagon and fire-engine versions of the 86-in.-wheelbase chassis.
