SIR LEONARD BROWE C.B.E., has been appointed Director of the National Union of Manufacturers, in succession to Sir Charles Hipwood, CB., who has retired intort= sequence of °indifferent 'health. Sit Leonard Brotiett has had a -long and

distinguished, career in branches of the CivilService closely connected With industry. In 1937, he was appointed Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, where he served through the strenuous early 'days of the war until 1941.

:Vic'. G. A. H.' PAYZE has been released from his duties by the Director of Mechanization at the Ministry of Supply (TT2), and will return' to the sales organization of Duple Bodies and Motors, Ltd., on September 1: His association with the company dates back to 1931. He was loaned to the Ministry in 1941; and, as deputy assistant director, has been responsible for the productionof specialized and • technieal bodies for Service and civilian needs.

MR. G. H. BROOKS, chief stall and welfare officer of the London Passenger Transport Board, retires to-morrow, August 25. He entered the service of the London County Council in 1889, when the Connell began to operate tramways, and for several years was personal assistant to Mr. A. L. CI Fell, general manager. He was• appointed general superintendent (road transport) in 1936 and was made chief staff officer in 1940, becoming chief staff and welfare officer in 1944. He is a past member of the Council of the Institute of Transport.

COMMANDER PHILIP BAKER, •O.B.E., R.N. (Ref:), has been appointed public relations officer to. the British Export Trade Research Or ganizatio is (B.E.T.R.O.)'. Before the war he acted in a similar capacity to the North Eastern Trading Estates, Ltd., en, behalf of the Leindon Press Exchange. He points out -that membership of 13-..E.T.R.O. is open to any 'British concern, large or•small, :which has the per• cepticn to see that market researchis, essential to its sales policy.
