• Leyland Trucks boosted its profits by 50% to £14m in its first full year of trading. Demand for its products soared by 37% to £192m.
It now claims 12.4% of the UK truck market. But continental sales of its new 55 Series will need to be strong to repay a £25m investment programme and to fund new models for the UK market.
The company also needs to replace the MoD contract for heavy 8x8 military trucks and four-tonne 4x4s which it completes this year. "Leyland wants to keep in that business and will be devising a project for that," says spokesman Martin Hayes.
