• Euro MP Edward KellettBowman is fighting for British drivers' right to carry piggyback tanks in France by lodging a complaint with the European Commission.
The MEP for lichen, Test and Avon wants the French to admit that they are breaking Euro rules and pay compensation for all the fines and fuel they have forced British hauliers to waste since 1992. Now he is waiting for a reply from new transport commissioner Neil Kinnock and threatening a battle if Kinnock fails to uphold Single Market rules.
Kellet-Bowman hopes to persuade the EC that the French were wrong to fine a local haulage firm 5,000FFr (f664) and force the driver to flush out his tank while on a run to Spain in June.
"They investigate each individual case but we're hoping to hear by the end of the month," a Kellett-Bowman assistant says.
