• Drivers throughout Europe share a hatred of speed limiters, says the Union Internationale Des Chauffeurs Routiers (UICR).
A survey of drivers belonging to the union reveals that they believe limiters prolong overtaking, create vehicle bunching, cause annoyance among following motorists, increase driver stress and reduce concentration. The UICR says drivers are spending an average of 12.5% more time on the road because of limiters so they use more fuel.
Freight Transport Association spokesman Geoff Dossetter describes speed limiters as "a fact of life". But he adds: "We're in the course of producing stickers for the backs of vehicles to explain that they can't go any faster. It's a question of image. We're slightly worried about people complaining about slow moving lorries."
