The code of practice produced by the Roundwood Haulage Working Party costs £5 from the Forestry Contracting Association (Lel: 01467 651368). It is available on the Internet on www.ukfpa.comk/pages/home.html. Its general recommendations include: Keeping the centre of gravity as low as possible; Integrating anchorage points into the main chassis; Using chain or webbing lashings rather than rope; Securing netting to vehicle body or uprights.
Its recommendations for cross-loading include: Attaching two cord straps to the front and rear of the vehicle; Placing cross straps at least every 2.5m along the length of the load; Using netting whenever carrying hardwood; Checking straps periodically during the journey and tensioning where necessary; A Health & Safety Executive publication, Managing Health and Safety in Forestry, is available from HSE Books (tel: 01787 881165). This outlines hauliers' responsibilities for health and safety when on forestry sites.
